Where We Sit

Fall 2022

Within this book I explore the form and function of several chairs that I would interact with in my day-to-day life. I have always been drawn to the design of chairs, loving their clean edges and varied shapes, fascinated that they all have essentially the same function while their forms can differ so much. I also find it interesting how much of our lives we spend sitting on chairs and how many memories are associated with sitting in these pieces of furniture really just meant to serve a utility purpose.

I picked chairs that I am often around at home or school, and I took images of them that highlighted their form. I rotated the chairs at various angles, keeping my camera in the same spot, and I had my friends sit in them to show their function, how one would interact with them. To juxtapose the utility of the chairs pictured, I provided personal anecdotes of my memories with these objects. I hand wrote the text and vectorized them so that the memories had a warm feel, countering the rigid grid structure of the pictures. Another element I incorporated to show a way to view the form of the chairs was to create abstract images out of their silhouettes. I used analog practices to draw these silhouettes. These abstracted spreads reflect the overarching theme of this work to explore the contradictory relationship between chairs' rigid forms and the deeply personal memories that come from sitting in these utility objects.
