At Northwood and Demun

Fall 2022

For this project I created a 6 spread booklet after sketching on site at a local coffee shop at the corner of Northwood and Demun Ave.  in St. Louis. Over the span of 3 weeks I would frequently visit the outside area of the shop, sketching the people and the architecture of the place while also talking to some of the regulars I would often see. After fully immersing myself in the space, I felt this great sense of community. People would gather with friends, family, pets, or even just come to sit by themselves, but all were drawn to this corner. The images in my booklet are a compilation of these sketches I created on site, and I brought them into Adobe Photoshop to manipulate the color and then into Adobe InDesign to manipulate the compositions.

With my booklet I wanted to create a narrative, a story of a day at the corner while the coffee shop was open. The colors reflect this narrative, beginning with dark purple and orange to represent the sunrise, while slowly transitioning into yellow and finally into blue when the shop closes mid afternoon. The text accompanying the images is written by me, describing the community that gathers at this corner, and the text also includes two quotes from members of the community I spoke to. Overall, this was a fun project and I’m happy with the final result!
